It’s a two and a half hour flight to Kota Kimbalu from KL and after leaving KL on a rainy morning it was nice to find it was fine in Kota Kimbalu (KK).We were booked into the Gaya Centre Hotel and it was very good. Right on the waterfront and pretty new and close to a new shopping centre and the Jesselton Jetty where you catch boats to the islands which have some nice beaches and snorkeling. We had to wait for our check-in so we went out to Sapi Island for the day and found some OK coral and fish to look at and it was a nice surprise to find an English Tea House just near the pier entrance when we returned. Great value tea scones jam and cream for the princely sum of $5 for us both!
We had wanted to climb Mt Kinabalu but all the places were booked so we had to settle for a tour up to the mountain NP and the Poring Hot Springs the next day.
